Despite a bit of the supernatural (which I hate), I really enjoyed this novel.  In a clever manner, the author tells Harriet's life story, moving back and forth between present and past.  I really liked it.  He has a wonderful perspective of the lives of women of a certain age; at first I thought it had been written by a woman, he is so perceptive.
