In the past, I have read a few of Tami Hoag's novels.  Then I read one that I didn't like, and kind of avoided for a while.  I picked up this one, the fifth in the Kovac and Liska series and was glad I did.  I don't think it is necessary to have read the prior four novels to enjoy this one.  It had a decent story, good character development, and I enjoyed it.  If you haven't read Hoag or haven't in a while and like crime/detective stories, give this one a try.
